“Jaguars GM Trent Baalke Eyes Contract Extension for Franchise Star QB Amidst Busy Offseason”

April 20, 2024

It’s been an active offseason for Jaguars GMT Trent Baalke.

Jacksonville secured QB Mac Jones, inked WR Gabe Davis to a three-year contract, and locked in pass rusher Josh Allen with a five-year, $150 million extension after tagging him in March.

Up next on the agenda for Baalke and the Jaguars: a potential contract extension for franchise QB Trevor Lawrence.

“We’ve had some productive discussions,” Baalke stated this week. “I spoke with his representatives last night. We’re making progress, but these things take time. Just like with Josh’s situation, it required patience. We’re committed to working on it. Ownership and the coaching staff are involved, and we’re optimistic about reaching an agreement.”

Lawrence, eligible for an extension after three NFL seasons, is coming off a year where he threw for 4,016 yards, 21 TDs, and 14 interceptions, despite battling through various injuries.

His impact on the franchise was evident in 2022, earning a Pro Bowl nod and leading the Jaguars to their first playoff appearance since 2017, including a memorable comeback win against the Chargers.

While Lawrence is due for an extension, there’s no rush as he’s still under his rookie deal. With Calvin Ridley departing the division, Jacksonville may look to bolster Lawrence’s receiving options in the upcoming draft.

“I’m impressed with the depth of talent in this year’s WR class,” Baalke commented. “The top prospects are exceptional, and there’s quality throughout the draft. We’ll consider all options to support Trevor and our offense.”
