Kansas City Chiefs Designate Jerick McKinnon for Return, Bolstering Running Back Options for Super Bowl LVIII

February 4, 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs could receive additional support in the running back position for Super Bowl LVIII, as Jerick McKinnon has been designated to return, according to a report from NFL Network on Saturday. This 31-year-old third-down specialist adds another dimension to quarterback Patrick Mahomes arsenal as the chiefs prepare to face the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas on Feb. 11. In his third season with Kansas City, McKinnon contributed with 21 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown in 12 games, showcasing his versatility with four touchdown receptions among his 25 catches for 192 yards. A groin injury suffered in Week 15 against the New England Patriots led to his placement on injured reserve but he can be activated to the 53-man roster if deemed ready by the Chiefs. In McKinnon’s absence, Isiah Pacheco has assumed a more significant role, leading the Kansas City rushing attack alongside Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Selected in the third round of the 2014 draft by the Minnesota Vikings, McKinnon boasts a career of 2,650 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, coupled with 269 receptions for 2,048 yards and 20 touchdowns, spanning his time with the Vikings (2014-17), 49ers (2020), and Chiefs.
