The Cincinnati Reds took a step back in 2024 after finishing just two games shy of the final National League Wild Card spot in 2023. This season, they ended with a 77-85 record, landing in fourth place in the NL Central. However, their young core remains promising.
Players like Elly De La Cruz, Spencer Steer, Jonathan India, and Matt McLain have sparked optimism for the future, but the Reds may seek to add some veteran experience to complement their youthful roster.
Erik Beaston of Bleacher Report mentioned the Reds as a potential landing spot for St. Louis Cardinals slugger Paul Goldschmidt.
According to The Athletic’s Katie Woo, the Cardinals are expected to part ways with the first baseman this offseason. Teams like the Reds, Angels, Mariners, and Twins could be interested in upgrading at the position.
The Reds wrapped up 2024 with Ty France as their starting first baseman, but an upgrade is definitely on the table. Despite his bat showing signs of decline, Goldschmidt remains an elite defensive presence at first base.
In what could be his final season with the Cardinals, Goldschmidt posted a .245 average with 22 home runs, 65 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and a .716 OPS. At 37 years old, he’s past his prime, but still capable of providing value on both sides of the ball. He could also offer veteran leadership to a relatively young Reds clubhouse.
Given Cincinnati’s small ballpark, Goldschmidt could take advantage of the dimensions that favor power hitters. And, of course, the Reds would have the added incentive of poaching a key player from their division rivals.
Goldschmidt’s market this offseason will be worth watching, and the Reds could be a solid fit for him.
