Red Wings Boost Roster as Key Player Hits Injury Setback

January 28, 2025

The Red Wings announced that Patrick Kane has been placed on injured reserve, retroactive to January 21, though his day-to-day status remains unchanged.

As the team faces off against the Los Angeles Kings tonight, they will be without J.T. Compher, who was injured after a hit by Emil Lilleberg in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Vladimir Tarasenko may also be out due to an illness.

The Department of Player Safety has called for a hearing with Lilleberg this afternoon to assess if further discipline is necessary.

Tyler Motte is ready to return, but if Tarasenko is unavailable, 31-year-old Shine could make his NHL debut. A native of Pinckney, Michigan, Shine has spent nine seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins and was previously on an AHL contract. His new deal will keep him with the team for the remainder of this season and the 2025-26 season. A former Northern Michigan University player, Shine has been enjoying a standout season with 11 goals and 32 points in 40 games, earning the new contract as the Red Wings look to retain him.

The Griffins rely on veteran AHL players like Shine to maintain competitiveness while Detroit’s prospects develop.

The Red Wings are also fortunate to have Michael Rasmussen in the lineup tonight after he took a scary fall while scoring an empty-net goal against Tampa. He was tripped by Nikita Kucherov and crashed into the net, but the injury turned out to be less severe than initially feared.
