As anticipated, the Chicago Cubs have parted ways with infielder Nick Madrigal today. Despite being only 27 years old, Madrigal will likely land another opportunity, possibly with a major league deal, though it may be for near the league minimum. His tenure with the Cubs ended not only because he wasn’t expected to justify his projected arbitration salary, but also because he represented a type of depth the team no longer needs on the 40-man roster—right-handed, light-hitting 2B/3B players. He was likely behind Matt Shaw, James Triantos, Miles Mastrobuoni, Ben Cowles, and Luis Vazquez on the depth chart, making him an ill fit for the roster. Hopefully, he finds a more suitable role elsewhere.
Madrigal’s time with the Cubs was ultimately disappointing after he was acquired in the 2021 Craig Kimbrel trade. His performance at the plate regressed, injuries were frequent, and his defensive development, particularly at third base, was the only positive takeaway.
Of course, there was one other bright moment we’ll always remember.
