Information is beginning to emerge on the Houston Astros’ position in Alex Bregman’s free agency. After failing to reach an extension agreement last offseason, Bregman’s market value has only climbed, particularly after winning his first Gold Glove and proving himself as a top-tier two-way player.
The Astros, who drafted Bregman second overall in 2015, have had a close view of his rise, yet there’s a real chance he could depart from Houston. The team’s unwillingness to offer contracts longer than five years, despite their desire to retain Bregman, remains unchanged, which may lead him to sign elsewhere—a move that could significantly impact the Astros’ 2025 World Series hopes.
Franchise icon Jose Altuve, vocal about his support for Bregman’s return, has repeatedly expressed this to both the front office and owner Jim Crane. Crane acknowledged Altuve’s influence, stating, “We love Altuve… We told him we’re making a strong effort to keep Bregman, and his input holds weight with both me and Dana [Brown].”
Part of the Astros’ current dilemma stems from prioritizing Altuve’s extension over Bregman’s last offseason. Following a sizable deal for Josh Hader, Houston had the budget for only one star extension and chose to secure Altuve, a fan favorite and cornerstone player.
This offseason, Bregman is expected to land a major contract as the top third baseman available. Whether Houston will heed Altuve’s appeals and offer a competitive deal to keep the infield duo together remains to be seen.
