The Detroit Lions secured their sixth victory of the 2024 season in impressive style, overpowering the Tennessee Titans with a score of 52-14. With a 6-1 record, Detroit is positioning itself as a leading team in the NFC and a strong contender for the Super Bowl.
Despite having one of the most well-rounded rosters in the league, the Lions still face significant weaknesses, particularly in their pass rush. Injuries to Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport have severely impacted this area, making it crucial for Detroit to address the problem before the trade deadline.
Head coach Dan Campbell suggested a potential trade might be in the works, playfully responding “could be” when asked by reporters if general manager Brad Holmes had discussed any deals, according to Colton Pouncy of The Athletic.
While there are numerous options available, PFF’s Bradley Locker argues that New Orleans Saints edge rusher Chase Young is the best fit to address the Lions’ urgent needs. Although Young has not fully met the high expectations set for him throughout his career, the former Ohio State standout could represent a low-risk, high-reward acquisition. So far in 2024, he has recorded two sacks and 30 quarterback pressures over eight games.
Acquiring Young shouldn’t pose a challenge for Detroit, as a Day 3 draft pick would likely suffice to bring the 2020 No. 2 overall pick to the team. Additionally, with his contract expiring, the financial risk for the Lions would be minimal.
While there may be more enticing options available, Chase Young would be a valuable addition to Aaron Glenn’s defense. He could step in as the primary pass rusher and strengthen a shaky defense, presenting little risk for Detroit with the potential for significant rewards if he performs well.
