The Philadelphia Phillies fell short of their World Series dreams in 2024 and may look to make adjustments for improved defense in 2025.
In a recent article, FanSided’s Christopher Kline proposed that the Phillies could consider moving All-Star shortstop Trea Turner to enhance their infield defense. However, his contract complicates this possibility.
“One popular hypothetical change for Philadelphia has involved All-Star shortstop Trea Turner, who has steadily declined on defense since his arrival,” Kline wrote. “While his bat remains strong, Turner’s defensive skills have diminished significantly. Once a Gold Glove candidate, he finished the 2024 season in the 25th percentile for outs above average (-3) and the 32nd percentile for arm strength. In short, Turner became a weak link in the Phillies’ defense.”
The challenge of repositioning Turner lies in the fact that he is being paid to play a premium infield position. While moving him to the outfield could boost offensive production, it raises questions about his readiness for the transition. Turner signed an 11-year, $300 million contract with the Phillies in 2023.
“As Jim Salisbury suggests on The Phillies Show, Turner’s $300 million deal likely came with an implicit expectation that he would remain Philadelphia’s shortstop,” Kline noted. “He rejected a more lucrative offer from the Padres to join his friends in Philly, and it’s reasonable to assume he values holding a prestigious defensive position.”
Turner has only started 45 games in the outfield during his career, all with the Washington Nationals. His bat is too crucial to remove from the lineup, but the Phillies must address their defensive needs at shortstop.
