Breaking News: Chiefs Ink Pro Defensive Tackle to Multi-Million Dollar Deal

June 14, 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs have added a fresh face to their defensive line, signing rookie defensive tackle Alex Gubner on Thursday after a standout performance in Mandatory Minicamp.

Gubner, who stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 294 pounds, impressed the Chiefs’ coaching staff enough to earn a spot on the roster. The former University of Montana star had an exceptional college career, highlighted by being named the Big Sky “Defensive MVP” last season. His 2023 stats included 45 tackles, 9.5 tackles-for-loss, and three sacks, showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses.

Montana’s athletic department provided high praise for Gubner, emphasizing his impact on their defense: “Gubner was the straw that stirred Montana’s defensive drink in 2023, helping UM to a historic defensive season. The Grizzly defense allowed just 108.5 yards per game rushing last season – the third fewest in the FCS and a Big Sky-low. UM also had the FCS’s No. 3 third down defense in 2023, allowing teams to convert just 29 percent of the time.”

The Chiefs are likely hoping that Gubner can bring some of that same tenacity and effectiveness to their defensive front. His college record suggests he has the potential to be a strong asset, particularly in stopping the run and applying pressure on passing downs.

In a related move, Kansas City waived rookie punter Ryan Rehkow to make room for Gubner on the roster. The decision to sign Gubner indicates the Chiefs are focusing on bolstering their defense as they prepare for the upcoming season.

As Gubner transitions from college to the NFL, he will have the opportunity to learn from a seasoned Chiefs defense and make his mark in one of the league’s most competitive units. His performance during the minicamp tryout has set the stage for what could be a promising professional career. Chiefs fans and coaches alike will be watching closely to see how this promising rookie adapts to the NFL level and contributes to the team’s defensive efforts.
