Marc Roca, the Leeds United midfielder, is on the verge of securing a move to Real Betis, though it remains unclear whether it will be a loan deal or a permanent transfer. Roca, who joined Leeds from Bayern Munich for £10 million in the summer of 2022, was one of several players to depart Elland Road following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season. Despite initial excitement surrounding his arrival, the Spaniard struggled to make a significant impact, contributing to Leeds’ disappointing 19th-place finish.
Faced with the prospect of playing in the Championship or securing a move to one of Europe’s top leagues, Roca opted for a season-long loan to Real Betis last July. His time in La Liga started promisingly, with 37 appearances, four goals, and three assists. Roca was particularly influential during the first half of the season, starting 16 of Betis’ 19 La Liga matches and featuring in all six of their Europa League group stage games.
However, his momentum was disrupted in early 2024 by a viral infection, followed by an ankle injury and a dip in form, limiting his contributions in Manuel Pellegrini’s squad. While Betis initially showed interest in signing Roca permanently, they are now reportedly unlikely to activate the £10.25 million purchase option.
Roca has expressed a willingness to return to Betis on loan if Leeds fail to secure promotion back to the Premier League. Following Leeds’ recent loss to Southampton in the Championship play-off final, this scenario seems increasingly likely. Reflecting on his future earlier this year, Roca said:
> “There is a clause like this year. If Leeds is not in the Premier League, I can go on loan again. Let’s see. It depends on whether they go up or not. They are things out of my control. I sincerely want them to go up because I wish all the teams I have been in the best. I am grateful to them; it has been my home, and from there we will see.”
As Leeds navigate their path in the Championship, Roca’s future remains in flux, with a potential return to Real Betis looking more plausible. His journey reflects the uncertainties and challenges faced by players amid club relegations and personal aspirations to compete at the highest levels.
