There’s been a lot of trade talk surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles lately, with tight end Dallas Goedert at the center of the speculation. Goedert played 10 games last season, recording 42 catches for 496 yards. Drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft, he eventually became the team’s starting tight end, succeeding Zach Ertz.
While the Eagles were fortunate to have Ertz followed by a smooth transition to Goedert, things aren’t as clear-cut for the team now. If they were to trade Goedert, there doesn’t seem to be an obvious replacement on the roster.
Currently, the Eagles have Grant Calcaterra, Kylen Granson, and Harrison Bryant, but none of them appear ready to step into the starting role. However, the team could address the position through the upcoming NFL Draft.
As of now, the Eagles have just over $22.4 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap. Some of that will go toward their 2025 draft class. Goedert’s current cap hit stands at over $11.7 million, and he has a 2025 option bonus of $13.995 million, along with a dead cap number exceeding $11 million for that season, which marks the final year of his four-year, $57 million contract.
Given the Eagles’ limited cap space and looming financial commitments, it’s not surprising there’s been trade talk. While they could afford to keep Goedert through 2025, it would put a strain on their budget. Without a clear succession plan and few appealing options in free agency, the upcoming draft will likely play a crucial role in the team’s decision-making. The Eagles could opt to keep Goedert for one more season, aiming for a championship run, and then reassess next offseason. Only time will tell.
