Braves Eye $3 Million Veteran as Potential Replacement for Sean Murphy

March 13, 2025

The Atalanta Braves will be without All-Star catcher Sean Murphy for the next few weeks as he recovers from a cracked rib. Given the physically demanding nature of the catcher position, it’s uncertain when Murphy will be ready to return. While the Braves have yet to add a replacement, they still have time to make a move. Recently, Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer predicted that the Braves could sign veteran catcher James McCann from the Baltimore Orioles. McCann is expected to secure a $3 million deal in free agency, according to Spotrac. Rymer noted that both McCann and Yasmani Grandal are still viable options, with McCann’s .667 OPS in 2024 considered solid for a catcher. Rymer also mentioned that Grandal turned down an offer from the Braves, who are in need of a catcher after Murphy’s injury. Rymer’s bold prediction is that the Braves will sign McCann for the entire season. The 34-year-old McCann batted .234/.279/.388 with eight home runs and nine doubles in 65 games for the Orioles last season. As a free agent, McCann could be signed for under $5 million.

With Sean Murphy sidelined for the next few weeks, the Braves need to bolster their catching depth. James McCann presents a better short-term solution than rushing prospect Drake Baldwin to the majors. While Baldwin may look big league ready, jumping him straight into the big leagues could hinder his development. Adding McCann would provide the Braves with a reliable veteran presence behind the plate until Murphy returns, ensuring the team’s long-term plans for Baldwin remain intact.
