Boston Red Sox New Ace Shines in Spring

March 4, 2025

The Boston Red Sox are taking a chance on former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and two-time All-Star Walker Buehler, signing him to a one-year, $21 million deal.

Buehler is also betting on himself after a rollercoaster career filled with both highs and lows. In 2024, he struggled with a 1-6 record and a 5.38 ERA, but a strong playoff performance convinced the Red Sox to take a risk on the 30-year-old.

On Sunday, Buehler made his spring training debut in the Grapefruit League, delivering an impressive performance by striking out four New York Mets batters over two innings.

After nearly two years away from the mound due to Tommy John surgery and rehab complications, his ability to generate strikeouts remains a positive sign. His K/9 rate dipped to 7.6 in 2024, a decline from the 9.2 and 10.6 he posted in his All-Star seasons.

Buehler is expected to play a key role in Boston’s rotation, with his health likely determining whether the deal pays off. Currently, he is slotted as the team’s third starter behind Garrett Crochet and Tanner Houck. Given Boston’s recent struggles with starting pitching, his consistency and ability to eat innings will be crucial if the team hopes to contend for a playoff spot.
