Steelers predicted to draft 2,000-yard superstar as replacement

January 29, 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in dire need of bolstering their offense in the 2025 offseason, after struggling to find playmakers on that side of the ball in 2024. The top priority will be determining the starting quarterback, whether it’s Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, or another veteran. However, improving the offense will require more than just a new signal-caller—it’s crucial to add more weapons.

With that in mind, Kyle Crabbs from The 33rd Team recently predicted that the Steelers will select Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Crabbs notes that Pittsburgh’s identity is built on physical, smash-mouth football, a style that fits well with head coach Mike Tomlin’s approach. With running back Najee Harris set to hit free agency after four years and nearly 1,300 touches, re-signing him could be an option, but investing heavily in a running back is often a controversial decision. Instead, Crabbs suggests the Steelers could seize the opportunity to draft Jeanty, who would provide a fresh, dynamic presence behind their recently revamped offensive line.

After declining Harris’ fifth-year option, the Steelers are likely to part ways with him, as he hasn’t done enough to justify a large financial commitment. Jeanty, who had a spectacular college season with 2,601 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns, is widely regarded as the top running back prospect. While it remains uncertain if the Steelers would use their first-round pick on a running back, Jeanty’s explosive playmaking ability and proficiency as a pass-catcher and pass protector make him a perfect fit for Pittsburgh’s offense. If he’s available when Pittsburgh picks, it would be hard for them to pass on a player who could be a game-changer for their struggling offense.
