With the Detroit Lions losing both of their coordinators, Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson, it will be interesting to see if any of their current assistants follow them to their new positions. Johnson was hired by the Chicago Bears, while Glenn joined the New York Jets, and rumors are circulating that they could bring some Lions staff members with them.
In particular, Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron believes that at least one of the Lions’ players might make the move too, pointing to cornerback Carlton Davis. Davis, who is set to hit free agency after his one-year, $14.5 million contract with Detroit, was impressive before a season-ending jaw injury in Week 15. He ranked ninth in the NFL for forced incompletions, demonstrating his ability to disrupt opposing passing games. Cameron suggests that reuniting with Aaron Glenn, now head coach of the Jets, could be ideal for Davis, especially since Glenn’s aggressive defensive style suits Davis’ strengths in press coverage.
However, the Jets’ interest in Davis might depend on what happens with their current No. 2 cornerback, D.J. Reed, who is also heading to free agency. Reed has expressed readiness to explore his options, which could leave the door open for Davis to step into that role.
While Davis showed promise in 2024, allowing a 55.3% completion rate and a passer rating of 77.0 when targeted, his injury history is a concern. He’s never played a full season, and his availability has been inconsistent.
Despite these concerns, the Lions may still be interested in re-signing Davis, especially given the uncertainty surrounding 2024 second-round pick Ennis Rakestraw Jr., who struggled in his rookie season due to injuries. Lions general manager Brad Holmes noted that Davis had a better year in 2024 than the previous one in Tampa, praising his performance.
With Glenn now in New York, he may look to bring in a veteran like Davis, who is familiar with his defense and could be a strong addition as a No. 2 cornerback and a veteran leader for the Jets’ locker room.
