“Astros Settle with Star Utility Player for $5 Million, Versatile Veteran Poised for Bigger Role in 2025”

January 10, 2025

The Houston Astros have resolved another arbitration case, this time with Mauricio Dubon. According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the team has agreed to a $5 million settlement with the versatile player.

Dubon, who has been with the Astros for three seasons, is a solid contributor. With the Astros making some roster moves, he could potentially see a larger role in 2025.

In 2024, Dubon played 137 games, posting a 1.1 WAR. His 2023 season was a stronger performance, with a 2.7 WAR and a slash line of .278/.309/.411, along with a 97 OPS+. While his offensive production has been modest, the right-handed hitter is highly valued for his defensive skills and versatility.

In 2024, Dubon played multiple positions, including right field, left field, center field, second base, first base, and shortstop. He has shown strong defensive ability at each position, and despite his bat being slightly below league average, his versatility provides significant value to the Astros.

The $5 million settlement is somewhat unexpected but reflects Dubon’s defensive contributions and flexibility. Ideally, Dubon would continue to improve upon his 2023 performance, developing into a 105 OPS+ hitter while maintaining his elite defense. While he has yet to consistently show this level of offensive production, his increased playing time in recent years could lead to continued growth.

At 30 years old and in his second year of arbitration, Dubon will become a free agent in 2027. He is now under contract for the 2025 season and will remain with the Astros for at least one more year unless traded.
