The Cincinnati Bengals are approaching a crucial decision regarding wide receiver Tee Higgins, who is set to enter free agency after the 2024 season, having played under a $21.8 million franchise tag. Re-signing Higgins presents a challenge, as the Bengals will need to pay their top receiver, Ja’Marr Chase, a significant sum, and the team may be reluctant to commit a large portion of its salary cap to two wide receivers.
Many believe Higgins will be playing for a different team in 2025, which is why Matt Holder of Bleacher Report suggests the Carolina Panthers could be his destination in free agency. He notes that if Adam Thielen is released, prioritizing a young No. 1 receiver for Bryce Young should be a key focus for the Panthers. Higgins, with 330 receptions for 4,595 yards and 34 touchdowns over his five-year career, will be one of the top wide receivers available this offseason. At 26, he will be seeking both a lucrative contract and the opportunity to step up as a primary target, something the Panthers can offer after some financial adjustments.
Although Higgins has been the Bengals’ No. 2 receiver behind Ja’Marr Chase, he has demonstrated the ability to be a No. 1, which is what Carolina needs. His presence would significantly benefit Bryce Young, who is coming off a strong finish to his 2024 season.
The main concern with Higgins is his injury history, having only completed one full season and missing 10 games over the past two years, which will be a factor for any potential suitors. Carolina has $29.1 million in cap space for this year, but that number will rise to $150.1 million in 2026, giving them both the financial flexibility and the incentive to secure a long-term deal with Higgins.
