“Milwaukee Brewers Bolster Infield with Signing of Former $70 Million Third Base Star Ahead of Rival MLB Teams”

January 8, 2025

If the Milwaukee Brewers are looking to make a move in free agency, adding another infielder could be a smart move.

With Willy Adames departing for the San Francisco Giants, the Brewers are likely to shift Joey Ortiz to shortstop, though this is not yet confirmed. If this happens, third base would become available. While Caleb Durbin could potentially take on the role, he has yet to make his major league debut.

For a veteran addition, the Brewers’ top target should be former Chicago White Sox infielder Yoán Moncada. Once considered one of baseball’s top prospects, Moncada is now a 29-year-old with nine years of experience.

Although he had a five-year, $70 million contract, Moncada is now a free agent and will likely sign for much less. Spotrac projects his contract to be just over $1 million this offseason.

When healthy, Moncada is capable of hitting over 20 home runs and batting close to .300. Given his affordable price due to missing most of the 2024 season, he could provide a significant boost for the Brewers at third base.

Adding a player with Moncada’s potential could make the Brewers a stronger contender in the division.
