“Mets Eye Major Move: Could Star Free Agent Third Baseman Be Next on Their Roster?”

January 6, 2025

The New York Mets strengthened their offense by securing Juan Soto with the largest contract in professional sports, but questions still linger, particularly regarding their infield.

While they could still re-sign Pete Alonso, contract negotiations remain at an impasse. As a result, the Mets may look elsewhere in free agency to address their infield needs.

According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Mets are still contenders in the race for Alex Bregman. The highly coveted free agent, who is expected to leave the Houston Astros after their acquisition of Isaac Parades, could be a key addition. Feinsand noted that Steve Cohen’s willingness to spend makes it “silly to count out the Mets” in any free agent pursuit, adding that Bregman could shift to third base with Mark Vientos moving to first, depending on the future of Alonso.

The Mets and Boston Red Sox are two of the top suitors for Bregman, who would significantly bolster the Mets’ infield. Adding him to their roster could elevate New York’s lineup, making them one of the top offenses in the National League.

Though Bregman, 30, may not be at his peak, he remains an impactful player, having hit 26 home runs and posted a 122 wRC+ with the Astros last season.

While the Mets have prioritized pitching depth this offseason, with additions like Frankie Montas, Clay Holmes, Sean Manaea, and Griffin Canning, an infield upgrade remains a crucial move for a team aiming to compete in the tough NL East. How the Mets handle Bregman and Alonso will be a key storyline in the coming weeks.
