The Chicago Cubs have been busy this offseason, already making a major splash with a blockbuster trade to acquire Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros. Tucker, one of the top players in baseball, is expected to elevate the Cubs to a higher level of competitiveness.
Clearly, the Cubs are gearing up for a playoff push. One key move they should consider is adding a high-leverage arm to their bullpen. In a recent Q&A with The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, a fan asked about the possibility of trading for Athletics star Mason Miller. While Bowden noted that the Athletics are unlikely to trade Miller, he suggested that a package consisting of pitcher Cade Horton, outfielder Owen Caissie, and shortstop Derniche Valdez might make Oakland reconsider.
“Again, the Athletics are not trading Miller,” Bowden explained. “But a deal including right-hander Cade Horton, outfielder Owen Caissie, and shortstop Derniche Valdez would certainly make them pause and think about it.”
Miller, a 26-year-old All-Star in 2024, posted an impressive 2.49 ERA in 55 appearances and boasts one of the best fastballs in baseball. While it would be a significant coup for the Cubs to acquire him, it would be surprising if the Athletics were willing to part with such a valuable asset, especially after making multiple moves to strengthen their roster this offseason.
The proposed package could be a compelling starting point for negotiations, but it remains unlikely that the Athletics will trade Miller.
