The Detroit Red Wings called up defenseman William Lagesson from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins on Monday, according to the team. With an open spot on the active roster, no other roster moves were required.
This marks Lagesson’s first call-up since he cleared waivers before the season started. His promotion comes as the Red Wings seek additional defensive depth, following Simon Edvinsson’s absence from Saturday’s game against the Kings due to a lower-body injury.
Lagesson, 28, joined Detroit on a one-year contract worth $775,000 during the offseason. Last season, he reached a career-high 40 games, initially playing as a depth option with the Maple Leafs before the Ducks claimed him off waivers at the trade deadline, leading to 10 appearances with Anaheim. Known as a reliable defensive presence, he can slot between the seventh and tenth spots on a team’s depth chart. Since debuting with the Oilers in the 2019-20 season, Lagesson has recorded 11 assists across 100 NHL games. Originally a fourth-round pick in 2014, he has established himself as a top AHL defenseman, utilizing his 6’2″, 207-pound frame for a strong physical presence and well-rounded play. His NHL possession metrics have been solid for a depth role, with a 49.4% control of shot attempts at even strength.
Lagesson has started well in Grand Rapids, tallying five points in 11 games with a team-best +10 rating, including a +9 over his last five games. However, this performance may not lead to substantial NHL ice time in Detroit, as he’s expected to be a backup in tonight’s game against the Sharks, providing insurance with Edvinsson unavailable.
Lagesson, set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, can remain with Detroit for up to 30 non-consecutive days or 10 games before requiring waivers to return to Grand Rapids.
