The Dallas Cowboys’ 2024 season is hanging by a thread, with a 3-4 record and back-to-back losses. Mike McCarthy’s team has fallen short of expectations in what was anticipated to be a Super Bowl-or-bust year.
A key factor in the Cowboys’ struggles has been their underperforming run game. Dallas ranks last in the league for rushing yards per game (74.1) and hasn’t managed a single 20+ yard run all season. If the team hopes to compete for the NFC East title, revitalizing their ground attack is essential.
The Cowboys’ backfield is in poor shape; Rico Dowdle has been serviceable, but veterans Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook appear to be past their prime. To spark the offense, Yahoo Sports’ Frank Schwab suggests that Dallas should target Miami Dolphins’ veteran Raheem Mostert in a trade. Although Mostert has been slowed by a chest injury and has had a modest start to 2024, the 32-year-old remains a dynamic asset who can contribute to both the rushing and passing game. This season, he has accumulated 197 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns across four games.
Mostert is coming off a standout 2023 season, where he recorded 1,012 rushing yards and a league-high 18 touchdowns, proving he can still be effective well into his 30s.
With the Dolphins sitting at 2-5, trading Mostert could be a smart move for general manager Chris Grier to gain future assets. For the Cowboys, Mostert’s speed and versatility would be a natural fit in Kellen Moore’s offense, and his affordable contract means a Day 3 draft pick might be enough to make the trade happen.
