The New York Knicks explored a trade for Memphis Grizzlies star defensive point guard Marcus Smart before ultimately finalizing their major deal for All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns this offseason, according to new reports.
Throughout the summer, the Knicks showed interest in Smart. With Jalen Brunson, a 2024 MVP candidate, as their only reliable point guard, Smart was seen as the ideal three-and-D playmaker to fill their depth issues. ClutchPoints’ Alex House provided insights into the Knicks’ pursuit of Smart, noting that their interest was expressed earlier in the offseason before acquiring Towns.
Smart could thrive in a fresh setting with the Knicks. The Oklahoma State product has struggled at the start of the 2024-25 season, averaging just nine points, two assists, and 1.3 steals in 22.7 minutes over the Grizzlies’ first three games, while shooting an underwhelming 34.8 percent from the field.
With Ja Morant and Desmond Bane dominating the backcourt in Memphis, a change of scenery could be beneficial for Smart. He possesses the defensive skills that earned him the 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year title, playoff experience from his 2022 Finals run, and a competitive spirit that aligns well with Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau’s approach.
As the season progresses, the Knicks may seek to make further moves, and the 220-pound guard could be a key addition to strengthen their roster alongside Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, and others. Smart has the potential to elevate the Knicks, making a trade for him at the right price a worthwhile endeavor for the franchise.
