Will Hernandez was having a standout season with the Arizona Cardinals, which held significant personal and team implications. With his contract nearing its expiration, he had every reason to perform at his best. Moreover, he played a pivotal role in the Cardinals’ offense, particularly in their physical, run-heavy approach. Unfortunately, the team now faces the challenge of continuing without him for the rest of the season.
In a game against the San Francisco 49ers, Hernandez suffered a season-ending knee injury. Head coach Jonathan Gannon confirmed the news on Monday, explaining that Hernandez’s leg was severely injured when 49ers’ defensive end Nick Bosa inadvertently crashed into him. Bosa had slipped off a tackle attempt on running back James Conner and rolled into Hernandez’s left leg, causing the devastating injury.
“Will was playing really well,” Gannon said, expressing disappointment over the loss. “He was an integral part of our toughness and our attitude. He practiced the right way, played the right way, and was a key contributor. It’s tough to lose him, but I have no doubt he’ll recover and come back strong.” Gannon also reassured fans that the team would adjust and find the right personnel to fill the void, emphasizing their confidence in the remaining players.
The Cardinals have already been grappling with injury issues along their offensive line. Starting right tackle Jonah Williams has been sidelined since injuring his knee in the first game of the season, with Kelvin Beachum stepping in as his replacement. The absence of Hernandez, who had been playing at a high level, presents a more difficult challenge. Trystan Colon, a veteran who stepped in for Hernandez during the 49ers game, is the most likely candidate to take over the starting guard position. However, rookie Isaiah Adams, who missed the 49ers game due to a thumb injury, might also be considered for the role once he’s healthy.
Hernandez’s absence will certainly be felt, but the Cardinals will need to adapt and find ways to keep their offensive line strong despite these setbacks.
