The New York Knicks have made a significant move just before training camp by trading for Karl-Anthony Towns, elevating their standing in the Eastern Conference. However, being a true contender requires a solid supporting cast around the stars. In a step toward addressing this, the Knicks signed TJ Warren to an Exhibit 10 contract on Wednesday, as reported by Ian Begley of SNYtv.
Warren, while capable, doesn’t have a guaranteed spot on the Knicks’ final roster. An Exhibit 10 deal allows him to compete for a roster position during training camp, but if waived, he could join the Knicks’ G League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks. This contract could also be converted into a two-way contract, though Warren’s NBA experience makes him ineligible for that option.
Following the Towns trade, the Knicks still have open roster spots with only 12 players on guaranteed contracts. Veterans like Warren, Landry Shamet (on an Exhibit 9 contract), and recently cut Chuma Okeke are vying for one of the final slots. Shamet, who has played for several NBA teams including the Clippers and Nets, will also be a camp invite.
Warren, once a standout during the NBA bubble with the Indiana Pacers, where he averaged 26.6 points and scored a career-high 53 points, has struggled with injuries in recent years. Last season, he played 11 games with the Minnesota Timberwolves, averaging 3.7 points and 2.0 rebounds. If he secures a spot, Warren could be a valuable asset off the bench for the Knicks.
