Sometimes opportunities arise from unexpected places, as was the case for Barrie Colts goalie Sam Hillebrandt when he received an invite to Philadelphia Flyers’ rookie camp. Hillebrandt, a 19-year-old who earned a gold medal as Team USA’s third goalie at the 2024 World Junior Championships, was on his way to the World Junior Summer Showcase when his agent and goalie coach informed him of the offer. If he performed well enough at the rookie camp, it could open doors for him at the Flyers’ main training camp.
Hillebrandt made the most of the chance, sticking around for the main camp despite being an undrafted prospect. He watched his teammates endure the infamous skate test devised by head coach John Tortorella, though goalies were spared from the toughest drills. Reflecting on the experience, Hillebrandt appreciated the opportunity to prove he belonged among elite NHL prospects, despite the significant jump in speed and skill from junior hockey to the professional level.
Now returning to his OHL team, the Barrie Colts, Hillebrandt has ambitious goals for the 2024-25 season. He looks to build on his previous campaign, where he posted a .899 save percentage in 33 games, while also aiming for a spot as Team USA’s backup goalie at the 2025 World Junior Championships. With his competitive edge and notable playoff performance in 2024, Hillebrandt is poised to carve out a promising path toward his professional hockey future.
