September 27, 2024

Due to the impacts of Hurricane Helene, Clemson University’s upstate locations will close at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 26. Thursday evening classes will be e-Learning optional, with the decision left to the instructor’s discretion. Information about Friday’s classes and other university operations will be provided at a later time. Affected locations include:

– Main campus
– CU-ICAR
– GreenvilleONE
– University Center in Greenville
– CUBEInC
– The Center for Human Genetics in Greenwood
– The Innovation Campus and Technology Park in Anderson
– Clemson University School of Nursing at Prisma Health

Instructors can choose between holding e-Learning sessions or canceling classes and must clearly communicate their decision to students. For e-Learning, instructors must offer make-up options for missed activities. The safety of students and faculty is a priority.

Hurricane Helene is forecasted to bring heavy rain, high winds, flash floods, and possible tornadoes, with the worst weather expected Thursday night through midday Friday. Clemson’s upstate locations could see 8-10 inches of rain, wind gusts of 50-60 mph, and some areas may experience hurricane-force winds. A Tropical Storm Warning and Flood Watch are in effect for the Clemson area. It’s important to stay weather aware, monitor alerts, and know what actions to take if tornado warnings are issued. Flooded roads should be avoided, and caution is urged around fallen trees or power lines.

For statewide locations, hazard decisions will align with county government directives. Details on delays and closures can be found on the South Carolina Emergency Management Division website.

Faculty, staff, and student workers should contact their supervisors regarding work expectations during the weather event. Timekeeping and leave information can be found through HR’s hazardous weather guidance. Transportation updates, including CATBus services, can be found on the Parking and Transportation website and on Facebook.

As for athletics, Saturday’s football game against Stanford remains scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Any changes to student wristband distribution will be communicated by the athletics ticket office. Fans traveling to the game are advised to plan for potential delays, as additional highway patrol may be deployed throughout affected regions.
