The New England Patriots are sticking with Jacoby Brissett as their starting quarterback for now, but a shift could be on the horizon. According to Albert Breer of The MMQB, rookie quarterback Drake Maye is expected to get his chance to start at some point during the 2024 season. Breer suggests that Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo’s move to give Maye some playing time during the recent loss to the New York Jets signals that the team is gradually preparing for the No. 3 overall pick to take on a larger role.
Breer notes that while the Patriots are being patient with Maye, his progress has reached a point where he could earn more snaps sooner rather than later. However, the Patriots’ offense—and particularly the offensive line—needs to improve before the team feels comfortable starting the rookie. Maye saw limited action against the Jets, completing 4-of-8 passes for 22 yards, while Brissett struggled, being sacked five times before being pulled from the game.
The timing of a quarterback change could depend on how well Brissett performs and whether the offense shows improvement. Breer adds that although teams often wait until a bye week to make such a transition, the Patriots’ bye doesn’t come until Week 14. This means Brissett will likely need to deliver consistently strong performances to retain the starting job that long.
