San Francisco Giants Make Bold Move, Splurge $151M to Secure Elite Third Baseman in Blockbuster Deal

Giants manager Bob Melvin and president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi were initially thought to have contracts extending through the 2026 MLB season. However, recent reports indicate otherwise. According to The San Francisco Chronicle’s John Shea, both Melvin and Zaidi have guaranteed contracts only through the 2025 season. This contradicts what was suggested when Melvin was introduced as the new manager on October 25, 2023. At that press conference, Zaidi mentioned Melvin’s three-year contract, but it turns out it was actually a two-year deal. Shortly after, Giants chairman Greg Johnson announced a contract extension with Zaidi through the 2026 season, aligning his deal with Melvin’s. Shea also notes that while their contracts are set through 2025, they include provisions that could potentially extend their tenure with the Giants into 2026.

When the Giants hired Bob Melvin to succeed Gabe Kapler as manager last fall, there were high expectations. However, the team has largely underperformed in Melvin’s first season and is now on the brink of missing the National League playoffs. Despite making several high-profile free-agent acquisitions this offseason, San Francisco holds a 71-73 record as they head into Tuesday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers. Given the struggles this season, Melvin and Zaidi might only have one more year to demonstrate they are the right leaders to restore the Giants to prominence in MLB.
