On Monday afternoon, the Chargers announced they have added cornerback Nehemiah Shelton to their practice squad, releasing cornerback Matt Hankins in the process. Shelton, an undrafted free agent, initially joined the Jets after the 2023 NFL Draft and spent the entire 2023 season on their practice squad, returning to New York for summer training camp.

The 6’2″, 185-pound Shelton played college football at San Jose State from 2018 to 2022. During his time there, he accumulated 195 tackles, eight interceptions, and 32 pass breakups across 45 games. Shelton earned Honorable Mention All-Mountain West honors in both 2021 and 2022.
At his pro day, Shelton ran a 4.77 in the 40-yard dash and recorded a 35-inch vertical jump. His times in the short shuttle (4.36) and three-cone drill (7.11) were considered disappointing for a defensive back.
