During the Ryan Day era, Ohio State’s recruiting classes have consistently attracted top-tier receiver talent. Although the Buckeyes missed out on the top 10 wide receivers in the 2025 class, they’ve been steadily building with other highly-rated recruits. On Saturday, August 31, while Ohio State was preparing for/taking on/returning from their victory over Akron, four-star receiver Phillip Bell announced his commitment to the program.
Bell is rated as a four-star recruit by 247Sports and is ranked as the 30th-best receiver in the 2025 class. He’s also recognized as the 22nd-best player from California. Bell’s commitment makes him the 26th member of Ohio State’s top-ranked recruiting class and the fourth wide receiver to join.
Ohio State secured Bell’s commitment over new Big Ten rival USC, making him the first Californian in their 2025 class. Hailing from Mission Viejo, California, the six-foot-three, 195-pound playmaker began his high school career at Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, where he quickly became one of California’s top receivers. As a freshman, he caught 57 passes for 1,002 yards and 12 touchdowns. In his sophomore year, he recorded 818 yards and 20 touchdowns on 73 catches.
In his junior year, despite facing tougher competition, Bell still managed 56 receptions for 633 yards and seven touchdowns.
Bell is known for his excellent ball skills and remarkable body control. According to 247Sports, he is more quick than fast, with outstanding route-running abilities that allow him to create separation that faster receivers might struggle to achieve. Despite not being the biggest receiver, Bell can fight through contact and win 50/50 balls in the red zone. He’s incredibly reliable with his hands and can make difficult catches in traffic with impressive concentration.
His track speed and acceleration are evident after the catch, and he was one of the standout performers at the SoCal Under Armour Next Camp in March.
