SEATTLE — The Seahawks bolstered their defensive line by trading for pass rusher Trevis Gipson from the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday in exchange for a late-round draft pick in 2025. This move comes amid uncertainty surrounding the health of Uchenna Nwosu, Seattle’s top edge rusher, who suffered a left knee injury during the preseason finale against Cleveland.
Nwosu’s injury, sustained on the opening drive due to a cut block by Cleveland’s Wyatt Teller, has been reported as a sprained MCL, which could sideline him for several weeks. Last season, Nwosu missed significant time after tearing a pectoral muscle, which severely impacted the Seahawks’ defense. However, this year, Seattle appears more prepared to manage without him, with Dre’Mont Jones expected to take on a larger role on the edge, the development of second-year linebacker Derick Hall, and the recent addition of Gipson.
Gipson, who has accumulated 11 sacks over four seasons (three with Chicago and the last one with Tennessee), was signed by Jacksonville on a one-year, $1.3 million deal, with $42,500 guaranteed. Despite the Jaguars’ hopes that Gipson would be an upgrade from K’Lavon Chaisson, he was outperformed in training camp by rookie Myles Cole and second-year pro D.J. Coleman, leading to his trade to Seattle.
Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson acknowledged the trade, noting that while Gipson performed well, the move was beneficial for both the player and the team. Pederson emphasized that such decisions are part of the business, particularly when teams have specific needs to address.
