“Seahawks’ Tight End Woes Spiral Out of Control, Forcing Emergency Signings Worth Millions Of Dollars as Injuries Decimate the Depth Chart Ahead of Season Start”

August 20, 2024

The Seattle Seahawks are dealing with injuries at the tight end position with just a week left in the preseason, leading to some necessary roster adjustments.

According to ESPN’s Brady Henderson, Seattle has signed former UCLA player Michael Ezeike, while waiving former Washington State inside linebacker Devin Richardson to make room on the 90-man roster. Additionally, The Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta reports that former Pittsburg State tight end Devon Garrison will also be signed, though the corresponding roster move has yet to be revealed.

Update: The Seahawks have officially announced both signings, with cornerback Willie Roberts and Richardson being waived to make room.

These moves come as no surprise, given the injury issues among Seattle’s tight ends. Noah Fant has been limited in practice due to a foot injury, Pharaoh Brown was carted off during last Thursday’s joint practice with the Tennessee Titans with his own foot injury, and undrafted rookie Jack Westover missed Saturday’s preseason game against the Titans with a hamstring injury. Before signing Ezeike, Tyler Mabry, Brady Russell, and rookie A.J. Barner were the only healthy tight ends available for the Seahawks.

Ezeike, who spent five years at UCLA, recorded 35 receptions for 407 yards and seven touchdowns during his college career. As a fifth-year senior, he posted 20 catches for 226 yards and four touchdowns. He went undrafted and was signed by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023 but did not make their regular-season roster.

Garrison, who caught 97 passes for 1,581 yards and 16 touchdowns over four seasons at Pittsburg State, earned All-American honors at the Division II level. The undrafted rookie received an invite to the Green Bay Packers minicamp earlier this year, and it appears the Seahawks will be the first team to officially sign him.
