The 2023 season fell short of expectations for the Los Angeles Chargers. Many anticipated a leap forward under Justin Herbert’s leadership, but his performance was hampered by an injury, and internal locker room tensions further impeded their progress. To address these challenges, the team enlisted veteran coach Jim Harbaugh, whose extensive winning experience is seen as pivotal for both the team and Herbert’s future development.
Despite Herbert being the expected starter, the Chargers recognize the need for a solid backup plan in case of another injury. In light of this, Adam Schefter reported that the Chargers signed UFL standout Luis Perez, who led the league in completions, passing touchdowns, and passing yards.

Although the UFL isn’t typically a feeder league for the NFL, several players have successfully transitioned in recent years, with Perez being the latest hopeful. Last season, Easton Stick primarily handled backup duties, so his future role remains uncertain. Nevertheless, the Chargers are optimistic that Herbert will stay healthy and lead the team throughout the year, avoiding the necessity of relying on a backup.
