The New York Knicks are exploring potential replacements for Isaiah Hartenstein, with one option being Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez, according to SNY’s David Vertsberger.
In a July 24 article, Vertsberger suggested a trade scenario where the Knicks would acquire Lopez from the Bucks.
Proposed Trade:
– Knicks receive: Brook Lopez
– Bucks receive: Miles McBride, Precious Achiuwa
Vertsberger highlighted Lopez as a player who could fill the void left by Hartenstein. Despite being 36 years old, Lopez remains a strong defender and effective rebounder, even if his own rebounding stats don’t jump off the page. Over the past six seasons with Milwaukee, he has shot 35.4% from three-point range on five attempts per game, adding much-needed spacing that could benefit key Knicks players like Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle.
Lopez, a 2021 NBA champion with the Bucks and a 2013 All-Star with the Brooklyn Nets, is currently in the second year of a two-year, $48 million contract.
The notion of trading Lopez isn’t far-fetched for the Bucks. Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer reported on June 21 that the Bucks are evaluating Lopez’s trade value as part of their roster reshaping efforts. Despite offseason additions such as Taurean Prince, Gary Trent Jr., and Delon Wright, the Bucks are still dealing with issues beyond depth, including the need to become an elite defensive team again.
The Athletic’s Eric Nehm suggested in May that the Bucks might consider moving Lopez to address defensive concerns on the wing. However, as of July 25, Lopez remains with the team, suggesting the Bucks are open to trade discussions but not actively pursuing a deal.
While the Knicks have yet to make a concrete move for Lopez, they have explored other options. SNY’s Ian Begley reported on July 18 that the Knicks have inquired about Atlanta Hawks center Clint Capela. Although it is unclear how serious their interest in Capela is, his veteran experience could also serve as a potential solution to the Knicks’ need for a replacement.
The Knicks are actively seeking ways to fill the gap left by Isaiah Hartenstein, with Brook Lopez emerging as a notable option. His experience and skill set could provide a significant boost to the team. However, the Bucks’ hesitation to trade Lopez and the Knicks’ exploration of other options like Clint Capela highlight the ongoing dynamics in the search for a solution to their frontcourt situation.
