The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense might see significant changes this season, with the reigning champs having the chance to add another game-changing weapon to Patrick Mahomes’ arsenal before the 2024 season starts.
As the Chiefs aim for a historic third consecutive Super Bowl championship, rookie receiver Xavier Worthy is already emerging as the deep-threat Mahomes has missed since Tyreek Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2022. Additionally, Marquise “Hollywood” Brown could be a major veteran upgrade to a receiving corps that led the league in dropped passes in 2023.
With Cincinnati Bengals and Tee Higgins unable to agree on a long-term contract, the star receiver is likely to play this season on the franchise tag. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has a chance to add a major offensive upgrade before the season begins. Veach and the Chiefs seem determined to ensure Mahomes has reliable weapons at receiver who can become consistent playmakers.
Adding Higgins could elevate the Chiefs’ offense significantly. Pro Football Focus’ Thomas Valentine suggests this is the move Kansas City should make this summer. “The Chiefs have long been in the hypothetical market for a receiver despite signing Marquise Brown to a one-year deal in free agency,” Valentine notes. “The Bengals might not be keen on trading Tee Higgins to a Super Bowl-contending rival, especially the reigning champions, but without a long-term contract on the horizon for Higgins, the Bengals could consider moving him for future draft picks.
“The Chiefs should join the sweepstakes. Travis Kelce might not have many years left, and Higgins would provide Mahomes with a legitimate X receiver.”
Higgins and Worthy would create a dynamic duo of perimeter receivers for Mahomes. Despite inconsistent quarterback play last season, Bengals signal callers had a nearly flawless 103.2 passer rating when targeting Higgins. He could be the upgrade the Chiefs need to complete this offseason’s transformation at receiver.
