With relatively few urgent needs, the Minnesota Twins might not be overly aggressive at the 2024 MLB trade deadline. Their moves will need to be carefully considered due to limited financial flexibility. However, one southpaw reliever could be a perfect fit.
The Miami Marlins have struggled for some time and will be sellers this season. They’ve already traded Luis Arráez to the San Diego Padres and are open to moving players like Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Tanner Scott. While Scott is drawing attention from the Miami bullpen, Andrew Nardi might be the better option.
Scott has performed well, with a 1.27 ERA and 16 saves, but his 3.26 FIP and 5.3 walks per nine innings suggest some regression is likely. He will have many suitors, driving up his trade value.
On the other hand, Nardi has a 5.30 ERA but shows potential for improvement with a 3.33 FIP and a 30% strikeout rate. His struggles are partly due to an uncharacteristic 61.9% strand rate and a .337 BABIP. For the Twins, Nardi could be a valuable addition, especially given their lack of reliable left-handed relievers. With Kody Funderburk injured, Steven Okert inconsistent, and Caleb Thielbar nearing the end of his career, Nardi could strengthen the bullpen.
Nardi’s low salary and arbitration eligibility in 2026 make him an affordable option, despite raising his trade value. He throws a 94-MPH fastball with good carry and a slider with two-plane movement, making him a promising prospect.
The Twins are well-positioned for the postseason but need more depth, particularly in pitching. While starting rotation is a priority, adding a reliever like Nardi could have a significant impact. With fewer sellers in the league, overlooked talents like Nardi could be key acquisitions for a team aiming for the World Series. The Twins, who hoped to have one of the best bullpens this year, could bolster their roster with this strategic addition.
