The New York Mets have dramatically turned around their 2024 season, entering the all-star break in the final wild-card spot with a 49-46 record, a stark contrast from their struggles in May. However, their bullpen, plagued by injuries and inconsistent performances, remains a significant weakness.
In response, President of Baseball Operations David Stearns has begun fortifying the bullpen by trading for Matt Gage and Phil Maton, and claiming Alex Young off waivers from the San Francisco Giants. Despite these moves, the Mets still need more reliable arms.
One potential target is David Robertson, a familiar face for the Mets. The Texas Rangers, who are having a disappointing season after their 2023 World Series win, may be looking to trade expiring contracts, including Robertson’s. The 39-year-old has been impressive with a 2.88 ERA, 0.934 WHIP, and 61 strikeouts in 40.2 innings this season.
While all-star closer Kirby Yates might appear to be a more exciting option, Robertson could be a better fit for the Mets. He would likely be less costly to acquire and is already familiar with pitching at Citi Field. Additionally, Robertson has a mutual option for next season, providing the Mets with potential control beyond this year.
As the trade deadline approaches, Robertson stands out as a sensible target for the Mets’ bullpen needs.
