LSU safety Matthew Langlois has made the difficult decision to retire from football following a series of injuries that have plagued him over the past two seasons. Langlois, speaking to On3’s Shea Dixon on Tuesday, revealed that ongoing knee issues, including an ACL tear suffered during the 2022 season, have led to his medical retirement.
A native of New Roads and former three-star recruit, Langlois showed promise early in his career, appearing in nine games as a true freshman in 2021 primarily on special teams. However, his season was cut short the following year after tearing his ACL in the home opener against Southern. Despite extensive rehabilitation efforts, he was unable to return to play during the 2023 season.
Langlois was notably absent from LSU’s spring practice earlier this offseason and has since been removed from the team’s roster. Confirming his retirement, Langlois expressed his gratitude and disappointment, stating, “I’ve been dealing with an ACL injury since the Southern game, which ultimately led to me medically retiring. I stayed at LSU because I wanted to play for LSU, which I was very close to becoming the player I wanted to be.”
He added, “God had other plans and although I would have loved to play for LSU, my body just can’t now. I’ve been rehabbing for the past 22-24 months and I’m finally taking a break from the pain and constant grind to come back and be the player I thought I could be.”
Langlois, who was also a standout high school track athlete and state champion, concludes his LSU career having appeared in 10 games, though without recording any statistical contributions. His retirement marks the end of a challenging chapter but reflects his dedication and perseverance in pursuit of his athletic ambitions.
