Less than two weeks before the start of training camp, the Houston Texans are fortifying their defensive line with a familiar face. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Texans have reached an agreement to bring back veteran defensive end Jerry Hughes.
This marks Hughes’ third season with the Texans, having originally joined the team in May 2022. Since then, Hughes has been a pivotal part of Houston’s defensive strategy, tallying 67 tackles, 13 quarterback hits, and 12.0 sacks during his tenure.
Hughes had a standout debut season with the Texans, establishing himself as one of the team’s premier pass rushers with 35 tackles, 10 quarterback hits, and 9.0 sacks. Although his 2023 season was limited to just two games for undisclosed reasons, Hughes remains a key asset in the Texans’ defensive scheme.
With Hughes back in the fold, the Texans’ defensive line is shaping up to be a formidable unit heading into training camp. Houston has made significant moves in free agency, securing top talents like Danielle Hunter, Denico Autry, and Folorunso Fatukasi to complement reigning Defensive Player of the Year Will Anderson Jr.
Hughes, originally drafted in the first round (31st overall) by the Indianapolis Colts in 2010, brings a wealth of experience to the Texans’ defense. Following a trade to the Buffalo Bills in August 2013, Hughes has amassed an impressive career total of 70.0 sacks, showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses.
The re-signing of Jerry Hughes underscores the Texans’ commitment to bolstering their defensive prowess as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.
