The New York Yankees have dropped 14 of their last 19 games, yet maintain a 54-35 record and are just two games behind in the AL East standings.
Their recent performance has been rough, highlighted by a sweep at the hands of the struggling Cincinnati Reds at Yankee Stadium. Despite this, they are expected to be active buyers at the trade deadline. According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, infielders Jonathan India and Luis Rengifo are potential targets for the team.
“The Yankees are prioritizing pitching, especially in the bullpen. However, two positional players that could fit well are the Reds’ Jonathan India and the Angels’ Luis Rengifo, both of whom can play across the infield, an area where the Yankees have concerns,” Heyman reported in The Post.
New York just had an up-close look at India during their series with the Reds. India, who can cover second and third base, positions where the Yankees could use upgrades, despite recent improvements from Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu. India, the 2021 NL Rookie of the Year, has been impressive with a .369 average and 1.034 OPS over his last 30 games, and his leadership qualities would be a valuable addition to the Yankees’ clubhouse.
Rengifo, a switch-hitting third baseman, has a .315 average and .800 OPS in 69 games. The Angels are likely to entertain offers for him as they consider trading other veterans like Tyler Anderson, Taylor Ward, and Carlos Estevez. Left-handed reliever Matt Moore is another name that might be available.
In addition to considering India and Rengifo, the Yankees are also looking to strengthen their pitching staff, particularly the bullpen. Anderson, Estevez, and Moore could be potential solutions in this area.
