Frankfort (Ky.) Western Hills defensive lineman Javeon Campbell announced his commitment to Kentucky on Tuesday.
Campbell, a four-star recruit, enhances the Wildcats’ Top 25 class and is regarded as the top recruit in Kentucky by both 247Sports and the 247Sports Composite.
“The coaches at Kentucky made it feel like home. They’re honest, great people,” Campbell said. Standing at 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, Campbell didn’t start playing football until his junior year, having been persuaded by his basketball coaches at Western Hills to give it a try. He adapted quickly, racking up 14.5 sacks that season.
Initially, he had no FBS offers but now joins Kentucky with 23 total offers. His other finalists were Alabama, Georgia, and Miami, with interest also from Auburn, Michigan, and Ohio State.
He made several unofficial visits to Kentucky during the winter and spring, followed by an official visit on June 7th.
“The Kentucky fan base and community are amazing, and the program is building something great that I want to be part of,” Campbell said. Besides being the state’s top recruit, he is ranked No. 109 overall nationally and No. 15 among defensive linemen.
Western Hills head coach Simon Vanderpool praised Campbell: “In my six years coaching seven Division I players, including a Tennessee sophomore starter, Javeon’s upside is unparalleled. His size, speed, and tenacity are exceptional, and he has the potential to play professionally. He’s a great kid from a supportive family, making him a joy to coach.”
Kentucky now boasts 15 commits in their class, with a strong defensive line group including Top 100 recruit Cedric Works and Georgia native Nicholas Smith. Campbell is their second in-state commit, joining safety Martels Carter.
