The Pittsburgh Steelers declined Najee Harris’ fifth-year option on May 2, making the former Alabama standout a free agent after the upcoming season.
During an appearance on 93.7 The Fan on Thursday, Steelers general manager Omar Khan discussed the reasoning behind the decision (per NFL.com’s Nick Shook).
“It was a business decision we needed to make by May 2. Najee is fantastic both on and off the field. Declining the option doesn’t rule out a long-term deal with him. I’d love to see Najee have a long career in Pittsburgh. He embodies what we stand for both as a player and as a person.
“We had to make a tough call, and this felt right for now. I love Najee and would like him to stay with us long term.”
Over his three-year career, Harris has accumulated 4,135 total yards and 28 touchdowns, starting all 17 games each season and rushing for over 1,000 yards each year. He’s also caught 144 passes, showcasing his versatility.
However, the value of running backs has diminished in today’s NFL, making lucrative second contracts rare. Harris has been reliable but not overly explosive, averaging just 3.9 yards per carry for his career.
Despite the option decline, the Steelers clearly value Harris as both a player and a team member. While his future in Pittsburgh remains uncertain, the possibility of a new deal is still on the table.
