Boston, MA — After a whirlwind journey that saw him briefly don a White Sox jersey, left-handed pitching prospect Shane Drohan has returned to the Boston Red Sox fold. The 25-year-old, not currently on Boston’s 40-man roster, is expected to head to Triple-A Worcester, pending final decisions from the club.
Drohan’s role with the Red Sox remains undecided, with team officials considering both starting and relieving options for the young talent.
The Chicago White Sox recently returned Drohan to Boston after he cleared waivers on Wednesday. Originally drafted by Boston in the fifth round from Florida State in 2020, Drohan’s return follows a series of events that began with shoulder surgery on February 21. Despite his setbacks, the White Sox activated him from the 60-day injured list on Sunday but opted to designate him for assignment rather than reinstate him, requiring him to stay on their active 26-man roster for the rest of the 2024 season to retain him.
Drohan’s journey back to Boston was marked by challenges during his rehab assignment with the White Sox. In eight bullpen appearances, he struggled, conceding 10 runs (nine earned) on nine hits and eight walks while striking out 15 over 9 ⅓ innings.
His career path highlights flashes of promise, notably in 2023 when he boasted a stellar 1.32 ERA in six starts at Double-A Portland before facing difficulties at Triple-A Worcester, where he recorded a 6.47 ERA in 21 outings, including 19 starts.
This season, Drohan saw brief action with Triple-A Charlotte, allowing four runs across 4 innings in five appearances.
As Drohan returns to the Red Sox organization, the focus will be on harnessing his potential and overcoming past challenges to contribute to Boston’s pitching depth in the near future.
