In Hugh Freeze’s first full recruiting cycle for 2024, the Auburn Tigers secured a class ranked in the top ten nationally. This freshman cohort, many of whom have just arrived on campus this spring, may be called upon to contribute early in their college careers. Freeze has openly acknowledged the need for these newcomers to step up quickly.
Three of Auburn’s freshmen—wide receiver Cam Coleman, defensive lineman Amaris Williams, and quarterback Walker White—were highlighted by 247Sports as part of their top-100 freshmen likely to make an early impact in 2024.
– On Coleman: The buzz around Coleman is high, with one source noting, “He’s impressed every practice, it’s unbelievable.” Head coach Hugh Freeze remarked that Coleman “changes us” offensively, after he caught four passes for 92 yards and a touchdown in the spring game. Auburn, which hasn’t had a draftable wide receiver since 2020, is in dire need of Coleman’s talent to rejuvenate their passing game.
– On Williams: Standing at 6-foot-2, Williams is a long, twitchy edge rusher who made a significant impression during spring practices. An insider praised Williams, saying he looks “already like an NFL player.” With the Tigers needing young defensive linemen to step up, Williams is expected to see substantial playing time early.
– On White: White, who shined at the All-American Bowl, has continued to impress since arriving on campus. While Payton Thorne is currently the starting quarterback, there’s a scenario where White could take over during the 2024 season. At a minimum, Auburn fans are likely to get a glimpse of White during easier games on the schedule.
These three players, despite varying expected playing times, are seen as vital components in moving the program towards its future goals.
