According to The Athletic’s Fred Katz, the Knicks were interested in signing the 38-year-old former Toronto Raptors point guard last season after his buyout from the Charlotte Hornets. However, Lowry eventually joined the Philadelphia 76ers, reuniting with his former Raptors coach Nick Nurse, and played the final 23 games of the season with his hometown team.
Back in 2013, Toronto almost traded Lowry to the Knicks as part of what was expected to be a rebuilding phase following the Rudy Gay trade. According to ESPN’s Mike Mazzeo, Lowry was prepared to move to New York before the Knicks pulled out of the deal.
Instead, the Raptors retained Lowry, who led the team to seven consecutive playoff appearances and an NBA championship in 2019. After two more seasons in Toronto, he joined the Miami Heat in a sign-and-trade in 2021. Following two and a half seasons with Miami, he was traded to Charlotte last season for Terry Rozier but never played for the Hornets, as he was bought out on February 11.
Now heading into unrestricted free agency, Lowry, who has no plans to retire, is unlikely to re-sign with Toronto. However, he intends to sign a one-day contract with the Raptors before eventually retiring from the NBA.
