Collingwood SANFL captain Jack Madgen is set to miss his team’s next match after receiving a one-game suspension for abusive language directed at an umpire. The SANFL’s Match Review Panel ruled on Tuesday evening that Madgen’s outburst during the third quarter of his team’s game against South Adelaide violated the league’s code of conduct. Footage showed Madgen’s frustration following a holding-the-ball decision against the Crows, leading to the suspension and a 25-meter penalty for his verbal abuse.
As a result, Madgen will sit out the upcoming game against Woodville-West Torrens at Adelaide Oval, with a return expected in Round 12 against Glenelg due to Adelaide’s bye in Round 11.
In a related disciplinary action, Woodville-West Torrens’ James Rowe was also suspended for one game for rough conduct. Rowe’s high bump on Central District’s Brinn Little during their game was deemed careless, with high contact and medium impact. The incident, which saw Rowe make contact with Little’s head as he went for the ball, resulted in a one-game suspension. The Eagles are challenging the MRP’s decision, and if upheld, Rowe will miss the next match against Adelaide, returning for Round 12 against North Adelaide. This suspension could affect Rowe’s Magarey Medal prospects following his strong start to the 2024 season.
