Auburn Lands 5-Star Linebacker: Secures Dynamic Commitment from Highly-Touted Maryland Recruit

June 12, 2024

Auburn’s recruiting efforts received a significant boost with the commitment of Bryce Deas, a 3-star linebacker from Baltimore, Md. Deas’ decision to join the Tigers demonstrates the enduring appeal of Auburn’s football program and underscores the promising foundation head coach Hugh Freeze is establishing on the Plains.

Deas, currently ranked as the No. 26 athlete in the 2025 class by On3, showcased his versatility and athletic prowess during a recent camp visit to Auburn. His standout performance caught the attention of Auburn’s defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin, who immediately extended an offer to the talented player.

“Auburn offered me,” Deas shared with On3. “Coach (D.J.) Durkin told me he didn’t know where to put me, but that he wanted me. He told me I could play will backer, starr … he just knows I’m going to play somewhere. I was excited. It means a lot. I have been plotting on it all week since I knew I was coming down here. I’ve been getting ready, preparing, drinking water because I knew it would be hot down here.”

Despite initially arriving at the camp as an unfamiliar face to the Auburn staff, Deas left a lasting impression, resulting in the Tigers’ offer. Auburn’s plan is to utilize Deas as a “defensive athlete,” potentially positioning him anywhere from safety to linebacker, according to 247Sports. This flexible approach aligns with Deas’ extensive skill set, as he also plays receiver and running back for his high school team.

Deas’ athletic metrics are impressive: a 76-inch wingspan, a 37.2-inch vertical leap, and a 4.53-second 40-yard dash. These physical attributes highlight his potential to excel at multiple positions on the field, providing Auburn with a versatile weapon in their defensive arsenal.

“I think it’s very valuable,” Deas told 247Sports about his versatility. “I think there’s nothing I can’t do on any down. Any situation. 3rd and long, 3rd and short, I can play all downs. I think that’s very valuable.”

Bryce Deas’ commitment marks a significant win for Auburn, especially given the rarity of recruits from the DMV area (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia) opting for the Tigers. This decision not only strengthens Auburn’s defensive prospects but also reflects the growing influence and reach of Hugh Freeze’s recruiting efforts.

As Auburn continues to build its roster under Freeze’s leadership, the addition of Deas illustrates a bright future for the Tigers, with dynamic athletes eager to contribute to the program’s success.
