Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has made it clear he does not intend to waive his no-movement clause, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.
Tavares is entering the final year of his seven-year, $77 million contract signed with the Leafs in 2018, which includes an $11 million salary for the 2024-25 season. Despite recent trade speculation following Toronto’s early exit from the Stanley Cup playoffs, LeBrun reports that Tavares is not open to being traded.
> “Regarding the Leafs, there has been no discussion between them and John Tavares’ agent, Pat Brisson. But regardless, if the Leafs were to ask, Tavares — who is a 2025 UFA with a full no-move clause — does not want to waive it to go anywhere,” LeBrun wrote.
Due to the no-movement clause in his contract, Tavares has the right to block any trade, likely keeping him with the Maple Leafs for the upcoming season.
Hailing from the Greater Toronto Area and having grown up a Maple Leafs fan, Tavares’ signing with the team in 2018 was a significant personal milestone. He expresses a deep connection to playing in Toronto and remains committed to contributing to the team’s pursuit of the Stanley Cup.
> “I love playing here. It’s a remarkable place to play,” Tavares said, via Sportsnet. “When I committed here six years ago, I saw an incredible amount of talent and a dedicated organization. I still believe in that vision and think we’re very close to achieving our goals.”
Last season, Tavares tallied 29 goals and 36 assists for a total of 65 points in 80 regular season games. He also contributed 1 goal and 1 assist in 7 playoff games.
