As five-star offensive lineman and FSU commit Solomon Thomas (from Jacksonville, Fla.) approaches the final stage of his recruitment, he faces a tough decision with two SEC programs vying to change his commitment. After recent official visits to Baton Rouge and Gainesville, the Florida Gators are closely competing with LSU, trailing just behind Florida State for the top-ranked offensive line prospect. Thomas, after his official visit, told Gators Illustrated that Florida remains a strong contender due to its culture, proximity, academics, and relationships.
“Considering life after football, the plan, the expectations, and the people, there’s nothing like playing with teammates you’ve known for a long time,” Thomas remarked about his visit. “The culture here is ‘Us.’ It’s something familiar and deeply rooted in what I believe in. Everything’s good in Gainesville, definitely.”
However, time is running short for Florida to secure his commitment, as Thomas aims to finalize his recruitment by summer’s end.
“It’s stressful. I used to enjoy it, but now I’m ready to make a decision and move on,” he admitted.
With another visit to FSU scheduled, the Gators put forth a strong effort during the recent visit, particularly because Thomas plans to enroll early. Florida ensured that many Jacksonville-based players on their roster interacted with him.
“They really pushed to get me on board. I’m enrolling in about six months, so it’s crucial to know who’s coming in,” Thomas explained. He was impressed by head coach Billy Napier’s business-like approach and the NFL experience of offensive line coaches Rob Sale and Jonathan DeCoster.
Thomas maintains a practical approach in his recruitment. Despite receiving VIP treatment, he focuses on the underlying realities of the schools.
“I knew what to expect before the official visits. I prefer shadow days to see the true environment beyond the red-carpet treatment. When the red carpet is rolled out, it’s nice, but I understand the real deal when you sign. Some people might not even greet you afterward. I can distinguish between what’s genuine and what’s not,” he said.
“Ultimately, it’s about a gut feeling. If you’re not excited to work hard with your teammates every day, nothing else compares.”
